Essential Safety Checks for DIY Murphy Beds (NZ/AU Edition)
Building your own Murphy bed is an exciting and rewarding project — but safety should always come first. Whether you’ve just finished installing your Easy Fold Murphy Bed Kit or have been using it for a while, here are some important checks to keep your setup safe and reliable.
1. Secure Wall Attachment
Make sure the wall plate is fixed into solid studs or masonry. Avoid installing into plasterboard alone. The wall anchors must handle the full weight of the bed during lifting and closing.
2. Check Gas Strut Alignment
The gas struts should move smoothly without bending or rubbing. If one appears slightly off-angle, recheck the plate placement according to the manual. Misalignment can cause uneven force and reduce the strut’s lifespan.
3. Inspect Pivot Points
Ensure the pivot bolts are tight and seated correctly. If they ever feel loose, tighten gently with a wrench — but don’t overdo it. This keeps the mechanism secure and smooth.
4. Test the Lift and Lower Movement
When lowering the bed, it should move steadily without jerking or falling quickly. If it drops too fast, check if the gas struts are properly connected or if they’ve lost pressure.
5. Child and Pet Safety
Always supervise children around the bed. The mechanism is strong and shouldn’t be used as a play area. Consider adding a soft-close or latch system if you have young kids.
6. Annual Maintenance Check
Just like checking your car or smoke alarms, an annual Murphy bed inspection is a good habit. Tighten screws, confirm strut performance, and test balance.
